It's a really good thing that we got
that training! We pulled out of our little sanctuary day before
yesterday and made really good time. This morning, we pulled into a
little picturesque town and thought we'd found a place to crash for
the day and scavenge, little did we know.
We decided to drive down some of the
side streets and see what there was to see, hopefully nothing. But
boy, we got way more than we bargained for. We found this white
church with a large yard behind a stone fence and thought it would be
a good base of operations. We pulled over, parked and got out, making
sure to constantly “check our six”, as Manny says. Nothing looked
out of the ordinary and nothing we could see moved, so we decided to
approach the building.
Manny went first and we stayed about
15 feet back from the double doors while he tried to look in the
windows, but they were covered up on the inside. He motioned us to
stay back and stay alert while he did a walk around the church to
check it out. Less than 10 minutes later, he was back and said that
from the outside, it appeared deserted.
Alex suggested we knock on the door to
see if any moans started and we did, but didn't hear anything from
inside. We waited five minutes and then, when nothing happened, we
stepped back and Manny opened the doors.
We should've waited longer. The
zombies must've been in the back of the church and had been making
their way towards the knocking noise they heard. They had only made
it halfway down the main aisle of the church and we could just start
to hear the moaning and growling they were making. There had to be
over 30 of them and they were very interested in whatever had
stimulated them to look for food.
Manny had already stepped back with us
and we all were backing up towards our truck. But there was no way we
were going to make it. They had seen Manny move through the open door
and surged towards us, moving even faster than they had been before.
Manny told us to wait for them to clear the church and aim for their
heads, shooting slowly, making sure our shots counted. I asked about
the noise drawing more from around us, but he said we needed to worry
about the ones coming at us.
When they got out the door and on the
stairs, we all started shooting. Manny, being the one with the most
experience, took three shots for every one each of us took. We were
able to take out about half of them with out guns before Manny gave
us the signal to grab our knives and form a circle, back to back. We
“formed up” and got ready for the fight of our lives.
Hack! Slash! Hack! Slash! That's all
that I could do for what felt like hours, but was really only about
fifteen minutes. My arm got really tired, really fast, but I had to
ignore it and keep going. I could feel the others behind me, making
the same motions I was, taking out the ones in front of them, while I
was doing the same. Zombie after zombie pushed in front of me and I
took them out with a knife to the head.
Looking back, all I can remember is
little snap shots and three second replays. It's weird, I didn't
think it would be like that. When we were practicing, we only ever
had a couple at a time, but today, it was one after the other, after
the other. It felt like they would never stop coming at us. And then,
I stuck an undead female through the temple and there was nothing
behind it. I blinked a couple of times, in shock it was over, then
let my arm drop to my side, turning my head to check on the others.
Manny was already moving out of
formation and going to check the street for other zombies that
might've heard the noise. The rest of us were all blinking like owls
and, if I looked anything like Alicia, I had no color in my face and
my eyes were glazed. We had to snap out of it quickly though, Manny
came back quickly and said we had to leave because he could see too
many headed our way already. We didn't even get to look or scavenge
for any supplies near the church. We all got back in the truck,
headed halfway across town and scavenged for a few hours before
heading out of town.
We've ended up at a farm house about
two miles outside town and down a long driveway. It was empty of
anything and anyone and we've set up our beds and are getting ready
to make some food. Hopefully, none of the undead that saw our truck
could follow us and we'll be able to get some rest tonight. Tomorrow,
we keep going, wherever we're going.
