From the journal of Nikki Feather, July 4

July 4, 2017

We're still at the stone house. It's so nice, we decided to stay a few days and rest. It has this really cool library of books on the United States and we've finally figured out where we're going. We're going to check out the Grand Canyon Caverns. From the book I found, it sounds like there's supplies for 2,000 people down there. So even if some people made it down there safely, and stayed safe, there still might be some supplies left and maybe we can find some people to survive with.
The supplies were put there during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and since it stays a nice, even 57 degrees all the time, everything is still good, the water, food, even the toilet paper. I can't wait to find this place and see if there are people still alive there. The cavern is about 210 fee below the ground level and they are the largest dry caverns in the United States. I guess only 3% of the world's caverns are dry caverns. I guess without the water, no stalagmites or stalactites really formed and they're rare.
I mean, if you were able to make it into the cavern and close the entrance, without anyone getting bit, then you could still be alive. It wouldn't be fun, since you would be stuck underground and probably without power at this point. There should be candles in the supplies, as well as flashlights, but still, no sun for months! Talk about Vitamin D deficiency!
Jackson and I are both in agreement that going to the caverns is a good idea or at least a better plan than just wandering around aimlessly. Where else should we go? We considered places like Aspen or Vail, since rich people lived there and we could find a house with solar power and live well. Or we could just keep going until we find a good place to settle, but who knows how long that could take. It's better to have a plan and this place could be a godsend, if we can get in the caverns and to the supplies.
If no one is there, then we'll take the supplies and decide if we're going to stay there or go somewhere else with what we can take. If there is a way for us to stay underground but go to the surface then it might be a good place to stay. And that's if there's no group of undead blocking the way down to the caverns. There is, after all, only the two of us and there's a limit on the number of undead we can take on at once. If there is a group, we'll have to come up with a plan on how to safely draw them away from where we want to go. Of course, we'll have to take them out, we can't have them following us back to the caverns.
I hope there are still people surviving there. Maybe, we can become a group together, if they're still good people. It would be really be awesome if we could have more people to talk to. I know I'm tired of hearing my own voice and I bet Jackson is, too. We just have to be careful that they're not inhuman, like the ones we saw evidence of, with all the brutality. We don't want to get taken by people who might torture us or rape me. I would rather die. But, please God, we'll find good people at the caverns and be able to join their group.

For today, Jackson and I decided to light some sparklers we found in the garage, drink a couple bottles of the good wine we found and eat a hearty meal. We did this to celebrate Independence Day, even if we're the only ones who are doing it. It's the little things in life that still matter. This celebration is something I've done every year and continuing it made me feel more human. Go figure.
Happy Birthday America.
