We
made it to Buckner yesterday evening. We had to leave the trucks
about a quarter mile away and walk in, but we made it. It was a
really scary walk through the forest, especially when the sun started
to go down and it started getting a little dark under the trees.
Every little sound seemed like it was louder than it had ever been
before and we moved as a unit, some facing forward and some watching
behind us. Thankfully, we didn't see any undead until we got to the
edge of the trees around Buckner and saw the three hanging out
between us and the building.
We
were all exhausted when we finally made it to the apartment and
everyone was really happy to see us. We'd taken so long to get back,
they were going to send out a search party today. Good thing we got
here when we did, they would've gone on the road to town and we'd
have come the way we did and totally missed each other.
It
was heaven to be able to clean up with hot water and sleep in my bed.
It's not a real mattress, but we'd found so many sleeping bags and
blankets that all of us have pretty comfortable sleeping places.
We'll be taking all the bedding with us when we move to town. Really,
we'll be taking everything with us, all the supplies and stuff we've
found since we came to Buckner.
It
was great seeing everyone and seeing that everything went ok here. No
one got hurt and they were able to take care of most of the undead
that slowly trickle into the open area around the building. I wonder
if there's a slight smell of us that brings them, but who knows. They
might just be wandering around slowly and I mean slowly. If we didn't
take them out, it would take them days to very slowly wander away.
Sometimes, they only take a step an hour or other times, they start
to sway in a circle and don't make any forward progress for hours.
Since there's no TV, Mandy and I have spent hours watching them
before we take them out and throw them into the old basement.
It
was fun telling everyone about the cool brick house we found to live
in. We told them about the shutters and all the old furniture and
appliances from the house being a museum. I told Mandy that there
were enough bedrooms that we could share one, if our parents agree.
We're all going to be living together, so we should be able to work
it out. The guys will have to share a couple of rooms and Mandy and I
might have to also share with her sister, but that would be ok.
It'll
be nice to cook on a real stove, even one that is heated by wood and
not gas or electricity, instead of on the little camp stove we have.
We can even learn to bake in the thing! That would be really nice, to
have some bread or cookies! My mouth is watering already.
We
rested today and plan on resting tomorrow. The day after, we will
start clearing the way back to the road where we left the truck and
then get everyone packed and ready to move. I know it's going to take
a few days to clear the trees, then a couple of days to get everyone
ready. Then we can move and settle into our new home. The brick house
is a lot less drafty and a lot more secure than the open staircase
here. Soon, really soon, we'll be in our new home! I can't wait!
