This letter was found by the group just
admitted to the Aspen compound. One of it's member, Ruth Powell, was
almost done with her doctorate in Anthropology. She collected an
archive on her group's way here from Virginia. The writer of this
letter, a nurse, was bitten by her neighbor and she tracked her
symptoms through her letter. Exerts are included below.

11:30 pm
I can't believe I got bit by Mrs.
Perez, my neighbor. I've made it for weeks working as an RN at the
hospital and I haven't even been scratched by one of the recently
turned undead that turn up there on a regular basis. But tonight, on
my way home, I saw Mrs Perez laying on the floor of her kitchen
through the window and went to check on her, only to find her undead
and hungry. Before I could get away from her, she had latched onto my
right hand with her teeth and I had to grab the butcher knife from
the block on the counter, and stab her in the head.
I've seen what happens when someone
gets bit and I know I don't want to become one of those mindless,
ravenous, beast. I am going to hold out as long as I can, write down
the symptoms I experience and kill myself before I turn.
1:05 am
My hand is throbbing and swollen twice
it's normal size. The skin around the wound is purple like a bruise
at the edges and red throughout the swelling. There is a discharge
coming from the bite that is yellow and smells really rank.
5:30 am
I have just woken up with a fever and
chills. My hand is on fire and the skin that was purple is now black
and dead. The hand is so swollen, I feel like my skin is going to
split and it's burning to the touch. The discharge is greenish yellow
and thick and just oozes constantly from the wound and I'm going to
run out of bandages in just a few hours at this rate.
7:30 am
I'm so thirsty and cold. I can't stop
shivering and my stomach is already starting to spasm. I heated up
some canned soup and got it down. I know I'm going to start throwing
up soon. I can't wait, throwing up is just my favorite thing to do.
Not! I'm going to go back to bed and hope I can sleep for a few
hours. Here's to hoping.
3:00 pm
I slept for hours but still feel like
I could sleep for days. I managed to get some soup to stay down,
although I wasn't sure it was going to cooperate for a while. I'm
glad it decided to stay in my stomach and hope I can keep hydrated
as long as I can. My fever is pretty high, I took some ibuprophen
but I don't think it's helping. I guess even ibuprophen isn't up to
handling the zombie virus.
9:00 pm
I started throwing up about ten
minutes ago. I made more soup for dinner and it didn't even stay down
a full minute before coming back up. My fever got so high, I sat in
the bathtub, in cold water, for fifteen minutes and it brought my
fever down a couple of degrees. Now, I'm freezing and can't get warm.
It's been around twenty hours and I cnt'a believe how horrible I
feel. My hand is discusting. It's llooks like something you'b see on
a corpse. The bite is indistingwishable now, the whole top of my hand
and the palm have sluphed the skin and the whole hand is one big open
wound up to the writs and down the fingers, except the nails, they're
intact for now.
6:00 am
I coulldn't get out of beb all night
long. I shoock and shivered and threw up even the smallest sips of
wter. I know I'm not writing everythng right, but I'm doing te bst I
can. My fever is out of control, my throat feels like raw nerves
being scraped with a knife with every swallow. My lungs feel like
someone issitting on my chest and I statred coughing around 1:00 am
this morning, 24 hours from when I got bit. I checked the pitsol,
made sure it was looded, so I caan take caer of muself when I need
to. I'm so tired, I have to go back to sleepe now.
12 Noon
Wow, I cnat think. I cnta swallow. I
can barely raize my hed off the bed to see what Im writng. I can
barly handle the pen. I dreemed about eating a dog and tearing it
apart with me teeeth. I need to take myself out sooonne.
