From the journal of Sarah Richards, June 10

June 10, 2017

Well, it took a little longer than any of us wanted to be ready to go back to the Port house. The plan was for us to rest for a couple of days and then start clearing the trees between us and the road where we left the truck on the 29th, but we didn't get to clearing until the 30th. All of us who came back from the Port were so tired, we needed the extra day to recover.
Once we got started, it was hard going. The trees were larger at this end, kinda like they let this side of the road grow back first, probably when Buckner was abandoned. Our little chainsaws just weren't really up to the tasks. We had to take chunks out of the biggest ones until they fell. It was really dangerous and we had to be really careful. Plus, we had to keep some of us watching for zombies being drawn to us by the sound of the saws. We had one every couple of hours and thank God we're far enough away from the Towers that the sound won't be heard by the building full of zombies over there.
It took us eight days to get through the trees and remake the old road. It was hard, tiring work and everyone who hadn't had to help with us getting back to Buckner were amazed we made it at all. They all complained the whole first day and then almost couldn't move on the second morning. I laughed because we'd all had the same experience but we weren't in our apartment, we were on the road and just had to keep going. We made sure that everyone did the same thing here. We really needed to get this part of the road done because we can take the truck we have here and drive all the supplies while most of us walk, then once we get to the other truck, there should be enough room for everyone to ride and we should make it back to the new house really fast. We've already cleared the way.
On the 4th, when we broke through that last line of trees, everyone cheered and we celebrated with a big dinner. We rested for two days afterward while people decided what personal possessions they were taking with us. I didn't bring as much stuff as Mandy and her little sister did. I'm taking all my stuff and can't wait to get to the Port and be able to find some new stuff, especially books. Without anything to do for entertainment besides read, books are becoming precious. I've already read the six novels we have, even the two stupid romance novels Mandy's mother brought. I want to look for books while we scavenge the houses and I'll take any book that I don't already have. Besides, we're going to need to know how to do things we don't know how to do right now.
If we're going to have any kind of power, we're going to have to find and hook us a system to the house we've going to live in. We're going to have to learn how to take care of a solar power system and how to fix anything that goes wrong like plumbing, electricity and wiring, any damage that might happen. We need a library of books and I'm looking forward to finding the books.

Mom says she can't wait to cook in a real kitchen again. I know I'm looking forward to eating food not cooked on a single burner, camping stove, a meal where everything is the same temperature. I can't wait to sleep in a real bed. Mandy says she wants a bath where she can soak for at least an hour. Everyone has something they want to do when we get to this place and we have a list of things that need to be done to make the place more secure and better for us to live in.
We've been packing for days and tomorrow, we are going to head out with the truck full of our supplies. We plan on getting to the truck and staying the night there. The day after, if everything works out, we head to the new house and think we can get there in one day, two at the most. Here's to hoping everything goes right.
